International Women take leadership in the response to HIV and AIDS

Women from around the world were challenged to turn their desire to see a better response to HIV and AIDS into action at the World YWCA’s International Women’s Summit in July 2007. The first-ever international conference on women and AIDS attracted over 2000 people to Nairobi, Kenya under the theme ‘Women’s Leadership in HIV and AIDS’. “We need to do better in terms of action that is relevant for women,” Dr Peter Piot Executive Director of UNAIDS said in his remarks at the opening session of the Summit. Such action is defined in the Nairobi 2007 Call to Action launched at the closing ceremony of the historic meeting.

The Nairobi 2007 call to Action outlines 10 key areas for action based on the existing knowledge and evidence about the life experience of women and girls around the world. “We have learned that to address the underlying issues which have created the feminisation of HIV, we need to address violence, conflict, gender inequality and poverty,” Susan Brennan, president to the World YWCA affirms. By developing the 10 points of the Call to Action, the World YWCA and its partners in developing the action hope to ensure a balanced and effective response to the pandemic. “These 10 critical areas will go far to rebalance the present power and balance between men and women that fuel the epidemic for women,” Louise Binder founding member of the Blueprint for Action on Women and Girls and HIV said at the launch of the Call to Action.

The World YWCA, the International Community of Women living with HIV (ICW), along with several organisations, networks, and individuals have committed to advance the 10 critical actions that will create change in the lives of women and girls around the world.
