‘Women are 2… Finding Solutions’, a new documentary on women and AIDS, will be officially launched at a reception at the YWCA Central Club in London on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2006. The 52-minute documentary produced by World YWCA and Mondofragilis brings together women leaders from various backgrounds and walks of life to share their solutions to the AIDS pandemic. The reception is being hosted by the YWCA, ICW and WAGGGS to promote the film and SOFIA, a new UK-based women's forum advocating for HIV and AIDS policies that empower women.
Women Are 2 features prominent leaders such as South Africa’s Vice President, Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka, who is heading up the AIDS response in her country, Mary Robinson, former Irish President, Kathleen Cravero (UNDP), Purnima Mane (UNAIDS) and Marina Mahathir, Malaysian AIDS Activist. World YWCA General Secretary, Dr. Musimbi Kanyoro asks them pertinent questions that push for innovative and urgent responses to the AIDS pandemic, and the women offer their solutions.
Who should talk to girls about sex in the context of the African culture? The answers are sometimes controversial, but always sincere. In the film, Dr. Kanyoro holds debates and discussions with women who work with girls and young women at the grassroots level, and they too provide their answers informed by their experience. The film shows that around the world, women are providing leadership in finding these solutions. At the local and the global, in governments and in grassroots communities, women are leading change to reduce HIV infection rates. They have ideas and opinions that should be heard. They have solutions that could change the course of this epidemic.
