Background
Over 1800 participants are participating in the first international women’s summit on HIV and AIDS, organised by the World YWCA in partnership with the International Community of Women living with HIV and AIDS.
The summit opened on 5 July with presentations by His Excellency, the Hon. Mwai Kibaki, President of Kenya, United Nations’ Deputy Secretary-General Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, World Health Organisation Director-General Dr Margaret Chan and UNAIDS Executive Director Dr Peter Piot. Fourteen women received “Women Leading Change” awards during the opening session.
The conference seeks to mobilize urgent responses to rising HIV infection rates among women and girls in every region. Key issues to be addressed include the feminization of the pandemic, gender inequality, health care and treatment, sexual and reproductive rights, women’s leadership and economic empowerment. The summit is hosted by the World YWCA as part of its World Council, its governing assembly held every four years.
Media must register to attend meetings at the KICC. Registration can be done on-site. Please bring your press credentials. A full schedule of events, bios, speeches and other information is available on request and via www.worldywca.org.
