none The International Community of Women Living with HIV and AIDS - ICW - Announces ITS Worldwide Campaign "Peace as a Chance to Stop AIDS” at the International Women's Summit
from Nairobi, Kenya
The International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS is introducing its global campaign to obtain a declaration by the United Nations of year 2011 as the “International Year of Peace as an chance to Stop AIDS”. The programme is coordinated of the International Steering Committee Chair, Marijó Vázquez, and Regional Secretary of ICW for Latin America and the Caribbean and 2007 Nobel Peace Prize 2007 candidate, Patricia Pérez, at the Kenyatta International Conference Center in Nairobi City

The campaign also aims to establish June 27 as the “International Day of Peace against AIDS”, since that day, in 2011, will be the 10th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS.

The campaign will take different forms according to different countries and cultural environments, so that it will attract attention from citizens all over the world and will be able to reach political, social, cultural, religious, sport and business leaders, among others, as well as the general public. Signatures will be collected for an open letter addressed to the United Nations Secretary General, seeking to get as many people as possible involved in the struggle against AIDS from a whole new perspective: the defense of Peace as a tool to stop the epidemic.

In doing so, ICW is kickstarting a worldwide action aimed to affect humankind as a whole in raising awareness regarding what Nelson Mandela calls “the possibility of extermination of the species”, unless we all find, without differences or discrimination, a Global Social Answer to the challenges posed by this terrible pandemic, which shamelessly and increasingly takes over the Human Race.

Together with ICW, the First Lady of Honduras, Doña Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, will also attend the Summit in Nairobi. A latin american leader in the struggle to make AIDS visible in the region, and a reference for the Coalición de Primeras Damas LAC regarding the struggle against AIDS, she has also promoted Patricia Pérez’s candidature for the Nobel Price.
