International World YWCA president announced

Susan Brennan, from Australia, is the new World YWCA President. The result of the July 9 World YWCA Council vote for the presidency of one of the world’s largest women’s organization was announced on July 10 to the jubilation and ululation of delegates. Brennan, 37, is a lawyer by profession and most recently served as member of the World YWCA Governance Task Force.

“I want to thank the wonderful women who run for president along with me,” she said when asked to address the delegates. Reem Najjar, YWCA of Jordan, and Dr Eun-Kyung Park, YWCA Korea, were the other two candidates for the position.

 

“I also want to thank Mónica Zetzsche for her foresight, and all my YWCA mentors” the newly elected president continued. Brennan will be ratified at a ceremony on July 11 at the Kenyatta International Conference Center in Nairobi, Kenya where the World YWCA Council is being held.

 

Susan Brennan is a barrister practicing in administrative, town planning and environmental law. A former President of the YWCA of Australia, Susan was active in providing NGO input into the drafting of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and coordinated human rights hearings at the YWCA International Women's Summit in 2003. She is a previous co-convenor of the Women's Rights Action Network of Australia and has written and spoken extensively on women’s human rights.
