Dr. Musimbi Kanyoro, General Secretary of the World YWCA
Dr. Musimbi Kanyoro served as General Secretary of the World YWCA, from 1998-2007. Due to her leadership, the World YWCA has empowered women and girls to lead social and economic change around the world.
 

Dr. Kanyoro made a significant contribution to the response to HIV and AIDS by steering the World YWCA’s priority to HIV and AIDS. Having recently hosted the first international conference on Women's leadership and AIDS, the World YWCA has helped highlight the particular impact HIV has on women. Dr Kanyoro is a founding member of the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS, the alliance of international youth organisations working to empower youth against HIV and AIDS and the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians. On behalf of the World YWCA, Dr Kanyoro participated in a high level think tank to map ‘Scenarios for the Future’ of AIDS in Africa, and served as an advisor in the Youth and HIV/AIDS study of the Alan Guttmacher Institute and the Gender, Faith and HIV/AIDS Initiative of Yale Divinity School.
