The World YWCA has joined the GEAR Global campaign: Gender Equality Architecture Reform at the United Nations. The campaign has been launched to push for a stronger focus on women’s issues at the United Nations.

The World YWCA was one of the first women’s NGOs to join the campaign launched at a special workshop ‘Building a United Nations that works for women’ at the Committee of Status of Women (CSW).

Women’s groups and civil society have long called for the establishment of an independent women’s issues focused entity that will unite major UN agencies and institutions that are focussed on the advancement of women and women’s human rights. The organisations that signed up to the GEAR campaign believe an independent entity will enable governments and the UN system to achieve their goals on gender equality, women’s empowerment and human rights.

The World YWCA calls on its member associations to support the GEAR Global Campaign and explore ways of lobbying its governments and politicians on the importance of the campaign. The campaign aims to demonstrate that civil society at all levels actively support a stronger focus on women’s issues at the United Nations.

How to get involved:
1. Share the information on GEAR Campaign with you partner organisations and local YWCAs.
2. Organise a meeting with UN agencies, especially with UNIFEM in support of the GEAR Campaign.
3. Create blogs and electronic forums to discuss the GEAR Campaign with other women’s groups around the world.
