As momentum gathers for the High Level Meeting on HIV and AIDS 2008 in New York, the World YWCA will host a side event on June 9 to ensure women and HIV are included in the discussions. As women’s organisations continue to be under-funded in the response to HIV and AIDS, the side event ‘Financing and Resourcing Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in the context of HIV and AIDS’ will explore evidence that points to the links between gender inequality and women’s increased risk and vulnerability to HIV and AIDS.

In partnership with UNIFEM, Global Coalition on Women and AIDS, Church World Service and Women Won’t Wait, the World YWCA has organised the side event to advocate for more accessible funding for women and HIV and AIDS.

“This session will bring urgent attention to the fact that women's organisations continue to be under resourced. We know that organisations say that they need twice their budget to do what they did in 2006,” says Sophie Dilmitis, World YWCA HIV and AIDS Co-ordinator.

The High Level Meeting on HIV and AIDS will review progress of countries who signed to the Declaration of Commitment on HIV and AIDS and the World YWCA will lobby to ensure governments prioritise women and girls in their national plans for HIV and AIDS. “Without financial security, women's empowerment may never become a reality. As women are more affected by HIV in 4 out of 7 regions in the world, it is clear that as we work towards achieving Universal Access by 2010, women's security is an integral part of the AIDS response, “ says Dilmitis.
