Dr. Peter Piot, Executive Director of UNAIDS talks with Dr. Musimbi Kanyoro, General Secretary World YWCA, during his visit to the World YWCA office
The World YWCA has initiated strategic alliances to enable a greater impact on the lives of women and young people beyond the reach of our own organisation, and within these networks has come to be recognised as a key player in mobilising women’s leadership on HIV and AIDS.

Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance

The World YWCA is one of the founding members of the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance (EAA), a broad ecumenical network for international cooperation in advocacy on HIV/AIDS and global trade. The YWCA mobilises its networks on the ground to add their voices to advocacy campaigns organised by the EAA calling for an end to AIDS related stigma and discrimination, and other issues related to the fight against pandemic.

UNAIDS

The World YWCA partnership with UNAIDS has resulted in several joint actions to halt the spread of HIV. These include:

'Women are...'

  • The World YWCA is one of the convening agencies in the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS , a broad partnership of agencies working together to lessen the devastating impact of AIDS on women and girls worldwide and was part of the initial steering committee set up to develop a clear vision for the Coalition’s work.
  • 'Women are...' a 52 minute film documenting women’s challenges and leadership in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
  • 'If I kept it to Myself' a book profiling personal narratives from women leaders in the response to HIV and AIDS.

UNIFEM

The World YWCA partners with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) to eliminate the gender inequality that fuels the AIDS pandemic. The most recent collaboration is the documentation of YWCA best practices in mobilising young women’s leadership. This document will be published in 2006.

International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS

The World YWCA and the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (ICW) work together to advocate for rights and concerns of women living with HIV and AIDS. ICW is a valuable resource to inform YWCA work relative to women infected and affected by the disease.

For 2007, YWCA and ICW are organising the Positive Women’s Forum as the initial event of the International Women’s Summit in Nairobi Kenya. The forum is a one-day meeting exclusively for women living with HIV and will be held on the July 4, 2007.

The Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians

The World YWCA collaborates with the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians to encourage and promote theological reflection and publication on issues concerning African women’s sexuality, including issues around HIV and AIDS.
