International World YWCA Day: YWCA of Belarus celebrates leading woman politician Lumilda Petina
‘LISTEN to she who speaks: women leading change’ is the theme of World YWCA Day 2008 and the YWCA of Belarus took the opportunity to listen to a leading woman politician. During their Executive Committee Meeting, Lumilda Petina, Co-Chairperson of the Independent Women’s Democratic Movement in Belarus addressed participants on issues of women’s development in the country.

Petina is credited with bringing the YWCA movement from Western Europe to Belarus. Lumilda did a lot to register YWCA in Belarus. She was the first General Secretary, through her experience and commitment the association was established and developed.

Petina is very active in Belarusian politics. “Lumilda was born with the idea of equality. She was able to transfer her ideas to different social groups. Lumilda visits regions often, even the furthest parts of Belarus. She is able to understand, support and inspire women. She does a lot to unite women in our country and abroad,” says Guschina.

Through out the day, local associations in Belarus will celebrate World YWCA Day with the ‘LISTEN to she who speaks’ theme.
