YWCA of Egypt provides HIV and AIDS information to women at recent workshop
A partnership between the YWCA of Egypt and Council of Development affiliated to the Evangelical Church in Egypt is raising awareness of HIV and AIDS for women and children throughout Egypt.

A ‘Together against HIV and AIDS’ workshop was held on March 29 in Shubra, Cairo and involved 30 women participants. “The workshop was attended by mostly illiterate women so we tried to give them basic knowledge about HIV. Through the help of a gynecologist, the women received guidance on personal hygiene and information on the importance of using condoms,” says YWCA of Egypt General Secretary Lilly Attalah.

Addressing some of the myths surrounding HIV is key in the partnership with the Evangelical Church and the YWCA of Egypt. “ We can reach the whole community with this partnership and really discuss some religious taboos concerning HIV, “ says Attalah “Initially, it was hard to talk openly about HIV. Then the community noticed we should talk about HIV and not hide it”. Further workshops will take place in Alexandria, Minia and Assiut.
