Among a number of exciting projects, the YWCA was involved in a major advocacy campaign to raise awareness of the Limited Preferential Voting system (LPV) during the national elections of Papua New Guinea. The new system gave voters more than one choice of candidate and encouraged female candidates to stand for office. “The YWCA worked with 3000 LPV trainers, as a result 60,000 families and individuals were reached with the LPV programme in 14 provinces, “ said Russell. The YWCA was also part of the Civil Society Election Observation Team and worked in partnership with the Papua New Guinea Electoral Commission. “ This was a lifelong experience for our staff and volunteers that participated in this new system, “ adds Russell.
Partnerships are key to the progress of the YWCA of Papua New Guinea. “ We celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Radio Project, which is supported by UNFPA. We presented media awards to our stakeholders and individuals for their valuable contributions on our radio programmes, “ said Russell. The YWCA of Papua New Guinea is well known nationally for their Tok Stret Radio Programme that features programmes on HIV and AIDS, literacy and a range of women’s issues —the radio show is not only popular among women, even men tune in. “Having faith in God as our core value has had the power to change lives and communities in collaboration with men, youth and the elders,” admits Russell.
With an impressive outreach of women and young girls the YWCA of Papua New Guinea has plans to establish other projects in the upcoming year." We are respected leaders at all levels. It has been noted that the YWCA of Papua New Guinea is the only vibrant women’s movement in the country.”
