Rosalie Fawkes, General Secretary of the Bahamas YWCA, joined the celebrations and assisted the new group in two training sessions. Fawkes and Cabey met last year at the World YWCA Council in Nairobi, Kenya. "I shared the knowledge, the challenges and the strategies I've learned over almost a lifetime," said Fawkes.
The YWCA of the US Virgin Islands has already established two programmes that include Y-Teens, and a Bilingual Kidz Club with Spanish and English instructors. "The club is for children to get to know one another and speak each others' language," Cabey said. "It's a way to come together when they are still young. We need to change patterns of behaviour." Cabey said the children would learn local customs, music, dance, and storytelling.
The Y Teens and the Kidz Club are just the beginning of the YWCA of US Virgin Islands plans to expand. "Right now," said Cabey, " we have a wish-list. The tiny administrative office already has a donated computer, printer and fax and we have gotten some furniture too.” Their wish-list include a second computer for the Y-Teens, a big area for the Kidz Club, a website, and a permanent home for a training facility with a recreation area.
