On February 27 the World YWCA delegation attending the Committee of Status of Women (CSW) met with former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson. Robinson, a long time supporter of the World YWCA, heads Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative. The organisation aims to “put human rights standards at the heart of global governance and policy-making”.

As former UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, Robinson has inspired many women and girls around the world. The World YWCA announced at the World YWCA Council 2007 that a Human Rights Award would be created in her honour. The award will focus on the human rights of girls.

In response to the continued turmoil in Kenya, the World YWCA delegation and Robinson led a consultation session with various NGOs and CSW participants to discuss women’s efforts for peace in Kenya. With a Kenya Peace Deal recently negotiated, the World YWCA released a statement to show solidarity with the Kenyan women community, ecumenical and government leaders throughout the reconstruction of peace at the national and community levels. The World YWCA also requested the Kenyan government to appoint women to senior positions in the coalition government and earmark funding to support displaced women to rebuild their lives.
