In observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people, the World YWCA and the signatories of the statement call for the United Nations to take steps to implement its many resolutions to bring an end to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip. Affirming that the occupation is shameful and intolerable, the NGOs call for all United Nations member states to help Israeli and Palestinian Governments reach a just and sustainable peace.
The statement gives an account of the massacre of November 8, 2006 in the Northern Town of Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip and calls for an immediate investigation into the events. The UN Security Council must intervene to ensure the protection of the civilian population in the region, insist the organisations.
Financial aid for Palestinian Authority, the release of democratically elected Palestinian Ministers and a monitoring system to register damages from the construction of the Wall, as instructed by the UN General Assembly, are some of the requests put forward in the statement.
The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, mandated by the United Nations’ General Assembly in 1977, is commemorated annually on November 29 under the auspices of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.
