Dr. Musimibi Kanyoro, General Secretary World YWCA, challenged governments to provide sufficient funding to make the empowerment of women and children a reality. Speaking at the launch of the UNICEF annual publication, ‘The State of the World’s Children’ in Geneva, Switzerland on December 11, Dr. Kanyoro stated that healthy, educated and empowered women have healthy, educated and confident daughters and sons. Her statement is confirmed by figures reported in the publication that show children of mothers with primary education are twice as likely to complete primary education than children who’s mothers do not have primary education.

The publication, which focuses on the Millennium Development Goal to promote gender equality and empower women, indicates that eliminating gender discrimination and empowering women will have a positive impact on the survival and well-being of children. Welcoming the report as “a break through”, Dr. Kanyoro demanded a strong and decisive response by governments, communities and individuals alike.
Governments and donors can respond with funding that ensures the human rights of women and children are upheld; communities can influence women’s equal rights in the household, workplace and political sphere by challenging social norms. “Gender is culturally governed,” she pointed out, “and we have to change the cultural ways that discriminate women.”
UNICEF and World YWCA, who have recently entered into a partnership, hope to promote gender equality, youth leadership and the meaningful involvement of young women and girls in creating a more gender sensitive society.
