International United Nations Human Rights Council: World YWCA focuses on women and peace in the Middle East
The World YWCA will participate in a roundtable event on peace in the Middle East at the United Nations Human Rights Council on March 17. Guest speakers Mira Rizek, General Secretary of the YWCA of Palestine and Tal Dor, an Israeli peace activist will address the theme ‘Ending Occupation, Ending Violence Against Women and Children in Palestine’. World YWCA General Secretary Nyaradzai Gumbonzvanda will moderate the session that is aimed at highlighting the human rights situation of Palestinian women and children.

The roundtable is organised by the Geneva Middle East NGO’s Working Group and will be held at the United Nations, Geneva.

Rizek is a long-time advocate for peace and justice in the Middle East. Along with her General Secretary role, she is a core facilitator of the Church Related Organisations (CROs) in East Jerusalem, as well as Chairperson for the Joint Advocacy Initiative and the Olive Tree Campaign, a joint project between the East Jerusalem YMCA and the YWCA of Palestine.

Dor is a Jewish Israeli and an accomplished community activist currently writing a book with a Palestinian woman that documents and analyses two woman activists against the occupation – one Israeli and one Palestinian. For the past six years, Dor has worked for ‘Mahapach-Tagier’, a joint Jewish-Palestinian grassroots organisation developing leadership and social justice in disempowered communities throughout Israel. Dor believes that peace between Israelis and Palestinians is within reach.” I don't think we can speak about peace in a situation of occupation," Dor argues. "I believe we have to speak about justice, equality and ending the occupation. We cannot live at the expense of other peoples and speak about peace."

Dr Helene Yinda, World YWCA Programme Director for Africa and the Middle East and member of the Geneva NGO Working Group on the Middle East said, “ We are really pleased that the YWCA of Palestine will have the opportunity to share their stories of living under occupation for 60 years. We hope the event will contribute to strengthen the Human Rights Council's work on peace in the Middle East.”
