XVI International AIDS Conference
none World YWCA to facilitate workshop: "ABCs: What about women?"
Theme of workshop: Does it work for Women?
The World YWCA, founding member of the EAA, will take part in the ecumenical and interfaith pre-conference with a delegation of 5 young women from Belarus, Zimbabwe, Argentina and Switzerland who will facilitate a workshop entitled "ABCs: What about women?". The workshop will be offered four times during the 3-day pre-conference. After the pre-conference, 3 other World YWCA staff members will join the delegation in Toronto for the international conference, as well as YWCA Canada members.

The two-day Ecumenical Pre-Conference will be held in Toronto on 10 and 11 August. More than 450 people from more than 30 countries are expected to participate. The pre-conference will include plenary sessions, skills building workshops built around several tracks, and daily worship.

The workshop sponsored by the World YWCA will focus on the following educational needs of young people:

The Right to Information & Education

Challenge
1. At the end of 2005, only 20% of females could identify ways of preventing HIV transmission.
2. Giving young people information does not encourage promiscuity; rather it fosters mutual respect and shared responsibility.

Action
1. Young people must be able to protect themselves from disease, abuse and eploitation. They have a right to information and to services.
2. Policies and programs are needed, including sexuality education, that promote open discussion of the responsibility of men and boys for their own sexual behaviour and for the respect of their partners.
