The World YWCA is one of the organisations taking the lead on women and AIDS, particularly on the issue of women’s leadership. It is one of the “convening agencies” of the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS and its General Secretary, Dr. Musimbi Kanyoro, is on the Leadership Council. The World YWCA has HIV and AIDS programmes in more than 60 countries. Programmes include prevention, awareness raising, home and community-based care, advocacy, care of orphans, and peer-to-peer counselling. However it is the YWCA’s focus on women’s leadership that makes it distinct in the area of HIV and AIDS.
