'Listen to she who speaks: Women Leading Change'
International World YWCA Day 2008 theme
The theme for this year's World YWCA Day is 'LISTEN to she who speaks: Women Leading Change'. The theme builds on the Honouring Women Leaders programme launched in 2007. The Honoring Women Leaders programme invites member associations and individuals to honour women in their community and make a donation in their name. The names of the women honoured are saved in the World YWCA archive for perpetuity and the donation goes towards the Power to Change Fund —a permanent fund to build the leadership of women and girls.

This year's World YWCA Day is about telling stories—we want to put life, voice, sound, music and colour to the stories of women who have brought change to our communities and to the lives of countless women. For your Round-The-World Breakfast we invite you to express the stories of women you honoured or will honour this year.

The Round-the-World Breakfast is an opportunity for every YWCA to hold a fundraising breakfast to celebrate the contributions of women leaders in the YWCA movement and communities. Over 24 hours on April 24, around the world, a YWCA will be sharing and listening to stories of remarkable women leaders who have affected change.

Tips and more

At your Breakfast, you can also share the story of a woman already in the Honouring Women Leaders archive. Featured stories will be available on the World YWCA website by end of March.

The World YWCA website will also feature a special message from the World YWCA General Secretary, video footage of women telling their story and articles on some of the remarkable women who have shown leadership and affected change in the YWCA movement. Listen, read and incorporating them into your World YWCA Day activity.

Honour a woman, make a donation

If you or your association have yet to make a donation to the Power to Change Fund through the Honouring Women Leaders programme we invite you to do so this year. To date, over 200 women have been honoured through the programme.

As you consider women for the Honouring Women Leaders programme, we ask you to reflect on the achievements of past leaders, the impact of current leaders and the value of young emerging leaders. Young women's participation in leading change must be valued and expressed along with the celebration of past and current leaders. Select women of all ages, particularly young women.
