The Alliance discussed the vulnerability of young people to violence and how as an Alliance they must collaborate to find ways to guide youth towards a life free of violence.
Other youth issues that were discussed at the meeting included HIV and AIDS, justice and peace, gender equality and economic justice for young people. With the International AIDS Conference taking place August 1-8, there was discussion around the possibility to organise a session for reflection as an extension of the HIV and AIDS work all Alliance members are undertaking.
Salil Shetty, Director of the United Nations Millennium Campaigns and a guest of the Alliance presented the ‘End Poverty 2015 Campaign’, which was created to ensure those in leadership positions are accountable in fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The Alliance expressed its commitment to the MDGs and shared its interest in engaging more with UN Millennium Campaigns to find creative ways to engage young people in advocacy around accountability and governance issues, inequality and violence at national and global levels.
Andres Guerrero, Partnerships Manager from UNICEF also attended the meeting to update the Alliance on a youth resource on climate change drafted by UNICEF in partnership with the members of the Alliance.
The meeting identified the need for the Alliance to strengthen its communication with the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations and other youth organisations to establish strong partnerships and bring the voices of young people to the decision-making table.
