As the death toll continues to rise in Myanmar, the YWCA movement stands in solidarity and support with the YWCA of Myanmar.

State media reported on May 6 that 22,464 people had now been confirmed dead and another 41,054 people were missing as a result of Cyclone Nargis on Saturday, May 3. Up to a million people are thought to have been left homeless.

World YWCA General Secretary Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda said, “Our thoughts are with the people of Myanmar and the YWCA at this time. We hope the YWCA of Myanmar finds the strength to respond to the emergency and the courage to face a difficult time ahead.”

The YWCA of Myanmar has nine local associations. Their mission is ‘train a woman, build a nation’. They carry out many programmes on vocational training and skills training including microfinance, care and support programmes for people living with HIV an AIDS, sewing, nursing, secretarial work, social work, income generation; primary health care and outreach programmes with the poor and the elderly.

The World YWCA will continue their efforts to make contact with the YWCA of Myanmar and to find ways for the YWCA movement to provide support.
