Shoes that tell about women facing violence

One thousand three hundred fifty-one: that is the number of domestic violence cases reported in 2008 in Belize. In view of this statistic, the YWCA of Belize has organised an exhibition of women’s shoes called “In Her Shoes” to get the public to look beyond the numbers. The exhibition is on the events calendar for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence.

The exhibition opened on the night of November 25, the International Day to End Violence Against Women. "In Her Shoes" is a display of 27 pairs of footwear, each representing the plight of 50 women. "Each shoe represents one of 50 women who reported a case of domestic violence in 2008. The total number of reported cases was 1,351. The shoes tell stories of survivors and other prominent women in the community who may not have experienced domestic violence but have worked in very many ways to end the scorch" explains Ann-Marie Williams, Public Relations Director of the YWCA of Belize.

The exhibition, organised in collaboration with the National Women’s Commission and the Women’s Department, was well received and will be open throughout the 16 Days of Activism.

A shoes exhibition is also taking place in Trinidad and Tobago as part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting hosted in the city of Port of Spain from November 27-29. Organised by the YWCA of Trinidad and Tobago, the exhibition aims to remember the lives of women lost to violence.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign originating from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Centre for Women's Global Leadership in 1991. Participants chose the dates, November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women and December 10, International Human Rights Day, in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights. This 16-day period also highlights other significant dates including December 1, the World AIDS Day. The 2009 theme is: Commit ▪ Act ▪ Demand: We CAN End Violence Against Women!
