Award now available for leadership around home based care in responding to HIV and AIDS. Apply today!

The role caregivers play in caring for their family members living with HIV and orphaned children made vulnerable by AIDS is rarely recognised or monitored and remains unsupported. HIV and AIDS caregivers are not officially recognised as an extension of the health care or welfare system, therefore their contributions are not mentioned nor included in the national accounts. Community based caregivers are also not provided with incentive or sustained support to enable them to continue with their unpaid work.

As such, the Catholic Organisation for Relief and Development (Cordaid), partners of the Caregivers Action Alliance’s (CAA) Organising Committee (HelpAge International, Huairou Commission, VSO International) and the World YWCA have launched an award of €20.000 (€15.000 for an organisation and €5.000 for an individual) to encourage leadership around the strengthening home based care.

Cordaid and partners are seeking applications from organisations or individuals committed to supporting home based care as a necessary, effective, and community-based initiative – recognising home based care as an insufficiently resourced, under-valued and unrecognised solution for mitigating the effects of HIV and AIDS.

YWCAs around the world have the experience of providing care in their communities. The YWCA of Rwanda runs a home-based care programme that has become vital to the community. Over 20 volunteers and counsellors have been trained on HIV and AIDS and received materials to give care to people living with HIV. Many of the people living with HIV or AIDS supported by the project have remarked that forming relationships with volunteers has given them the confidence to reintergrate into the community where they were once ostracised from.
