At the end of 2007, six million people were living with HIV in the Asia- Pacific region. Various factors make Asia vulnerable to the spread of HIV including the unequal status of women, poverty, inequality, stigma and cultural myths about sex and migration.
The causes and consequences of vulnerability to HIV that women and poor communities cope with on a daily basis are not visible and well understood.Yet, positive women and poor communities in Asia and Pacific region supporting innovative comprehensive prevention initiative and providing care and support in their communities. These approaches that address the underlying causes and mitigate on the negative impacts requires investment and scaling up.
The World YWCA, in partnership with the Huairou Commission will host a side event at the ICAAP 9 to explore how women and girls in Asia and Pacific are leading community responses to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and HIV.
The side event, to be held on August 10, 2009 will include panelists working in communities in Asia and the Pacific who will share how AIDS is affecting their communities and debate emerging issues and challenges. They will share effective strategies being used to cope with HIV and AIDS, including as home-based caregivers and community health workers. It will also be an opportunity for global linkages and peer learning between women across Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, with recommendations for policy consideration and strategic programme intervention.
ICAAP 9 will bring people from various backgrounds in Asia and the Pacific region to meet and share knowledge, skills, ideas, research findings related to HIV and AIDS. The Congress will run from August 9-13 2009 in Bali, Indonesia with the theme �Empowering People, Strengthening Networks’.
The World YWCA delegation includes 17 YWCA women and young women from the Asia and Pacific region along with World YWCA staff.
