International Volunteer Day 2008
The YWCA of Rwanda celebrates its volunteers
International Volunteer Day in Rwanda
As the impact of the global economic downturn during 2009 impacts the world over, nobody more acutely than those already living on the edge feel it. The average daily wage in Rwanda is just $1 which must feed an entire family, pay school fees and buy essential medicines. With this in mind, the YWCA of Rwanda decided to raise awareness of and help ease the plight of those living in poverty on International Volunteer Day, December 5.

YWCA of Rwanda youth volunteers travelled to Rwamagana, one of the poorest districts in Rwanda, to help cultivate the land for locals. They also provided small hygiene gift boxes for the families who could not afford essential items such as soap and basic medical supplies. Due to the campaigning of all those organisations taking part, other items were donated such as clothing and building materials.

“For some, the situation was desperate. We saw mud huts falling apart because of the rains making homes incredibly unsanitary. One family had constructed a roof out of rice sacks sewn together and with the rainy season still present, their home was a breeding ground for water borne diseases; especially malaria. I cannot imagine how they coped” said Hayley Pert, active member of the YWCA of Rwanda.

The YWCA of Rwanda could not continue the great work it does without the help of incredibly dedicated volunteers. The Home Based Care HIV and AIDS project is run almost entirely by volunteers who provide much needed food and hygiene materials, peer education and counselling services to those living with HIV and AIDS weekly.

“It is a pleasure to see our volunteers fighting poverty so wholeheartedly and all at YWCA Rwanda are deeply proud of the great contribution made by volunteers nationally in Rwanda but also globally within the World YWCA network”.
